On Saturday, October 6th, some of the participating artists gathered at the Village Quill to talk about their art, the exhibition and about Armenian Culture in general. It was nice that even few people that were there that day just to see the exhibition were really interested in the discussion and stayed to join us. They were very glad to have the opportunity to ask questions and hear answers from the artists themselves.
The Armenian Weekly wrote about the poetry reading. Some of the poems are published too. The PDF of the newspaper is on the APP's blog.
On Friday, October 5th, The 1st Armenian Women’s Art Exhibition hosted a program of Armenian Contemporary Poetry, organized by Lola Koundakjian. Armenian and English works were read by a diverse group of authors. Most of these poets are published and/or have appeared in the Armenian Poetry Project, a program that disseminates Armenian Poetry through the internet and iTunes. I'd like to thank you for your hard work to make the 1st Armenian Women Artists Exhibit a success. I hope there will be several others following this one. I have no pictures to contribute except the one with you,Tamar, and the other one was posted in the blog, while I was commenting on my own art. The Opening night was quite full and very pleasant to meet new people and mingle with other artists. The Artists Discussion was quite exciting and fruitful.
This exhibition is a celebration of unity. Bringing artists with shared Armenian roots but diverse cultural influences under one roof in NYC the exhibition will explore how their individual experiences are expressed in their art. The show is unique not only for the differing cultural backgrounds that the artists are coming from, but also for the diversity of styles and mediums that they are creating in.
The history of Armenian art is not rich with famous women artists and the few female artists of the past century did not receive the recognition they deserved. Today we can proudly announce that already many artists of this exhibition have their stable place in the contemporary art scene.
Featuring 23 Armenian female artists, born in Armenia, Lebanon, Iran, Turkey and the US the exhibition will create a social and professional network between the artists and will increase the appreciation and the awareness of their art inside and outside the Armenian Community.
The exhibition will run till November 3rd at the Village Quill in TriBeCa 106 Franklin St., 2nd floor 212.226.0442 http://www.villagequill.com/
